![]() Parris Hill Farm Alpacas ~![]() "Drive By" Breedings WHY
CONSIDER “DRIVE BY” BREEDINGS? Consider
them, first and foremost, for the health of your female alpaca, any
cria
by her
side and the other members of your herd. The availability of each of our herd sires may vary,
particularly due to co-ownership contractual agreements. Some
of our partners do offer traditional residency breedings, as well
as drive-by breedings.
At a vet seminar by Dr. Ahmed Tibary, the renown camelid reproductive specialist, Dr. Tibary confirmed something we had already been told by our own vets. It takes … > 30 minutes to one hour after
breeding for the female to produce the hormone that causes ovulation. Thus, travel
stress
may not
be an issue for quite a few days. Dr.
Tibary recommended that the female, however, should not be transported
for
about an hour after breeding while she produces the hormone that causes
ovulation.
You would
need access to a mature male to test your female for receptivity before
taking
her to breed and after the breeding to test for signs of pregnancy. You also have the option to do an ultra sound
for purposes of confirming a mature follicle. Consult
with your vet before using hormones to induce
ovulation. The breeding cycle
and the receptivity of a proven female can often be determined by using
the date of the last cria birth. We have found the following link
to a "Lama Re-breeding Chart" to be helpful:
This information should always be used in conjunction with behavior testing for receptivity.
HERD
HEALTH In
addition to the required transport papers and current vaccines/worming,
we
request a statement of a full health/condition/fecal exam (including
external
parasites) & a reproductive exam -
even on maidens who would also be checked for a persistent hymen. Also, the
female and any accompanying cria would need to be tested for
BVDV. We would
be happy to provide our "Visiting Female Protocol" to prospective
breeding clients.
